Thanksgiving
a flight of red wing black birds explodes
from the ground to cool November air
sounding like a million heartbeats
of frantic lifting
leaping black bodies
wings flashing cadmium red and cadmium yellow
beneath a winter sky of low slow moving clouds
in all values of gray
layered like wedding cake
above a twisted river
bright as polished silver
frozen in time
like family silverware
awaiting a feast
